Today's Notes

Ground Rules (to honor everyone’s contribution to this subcommittee):
§ It is important that everyone contributes their voice.
§ Please be aware of varying comfort levels (i.e. “being out) related to identifying as being LGBTQ.
§ Respect all people at all times. This includes NO racism, classism, heterosexism, ableism, ageism, and other forms of discrimination.
§ It is okay to ask questions about an issue that may be bothering you. If you feel uncomfortable speaking about the issue in the group, please contact R.E. or Sheryll.
§ Assume good intentions as we learn from each other. Provide & accept feedback.
§ New rules can be added to this list as participants feel necessary.

I. Introductions: name, pronoun preference, 2 sentence intro
April
Antonio
E
R.E.
Gustavo
Sheryll
Susan

II. Blog update: Sheryll
Has everyone received the invitation?
www.lgbttalks.blogspot.com
Blog contains: reminders about meetings, introductions, meeting notes…
E: minutes from other calls could go up.
Antonio will join the blog.

III. MySpace update: E
Wasn’t able to create the myspace group yet b/c created a new profile.
Profile name…
Will let us know as soon as it’s up, by the end of this week.

IV. Flier update: E
Took off no smoking icon. Mostly just created more space. Also trying to create another for recruiting people to come – for myspace or the blog.

V. Ball Planning:

a. Contacts in Minneapolis:

§ Shiney Shapiro, Program Manager, District 202. www.dist202.org. R.E. will ask to be on the next call.

§ Damien Hughes, House of Manolo Blahnik – Chico can contact. Will ask him to be on the next call.

§ Other houses? – Chico will find out

§ Minneapolis area drag troupes? - R.E. will ask about this.

§ Holly – heads the new youth tobacco free mvmt with blue cross blue shield. Will probably be heading all youth activities at the NCToH

R.E. hasn’t been successful in reaching Shiney.

Antonio: Dist202 is in a time of huge transition right now, so many things are up in the air. Some staff leaving, also space may be moving. Will call Alex, the interim director, and follow up with Shiney.

b. Tobacco prevention / youth marketing related categories for performances

Who could draft some tobacco prevention categories? Sheryll & Gustavo. R.E. will ask Chico.
Susan loves the rhyming.

c. Logistics

Date?
Tuesday? Depends on the time. Content committee…has a question mark behind a 6-8pm dinner or reception. R.E. What if the ball was merged with this? Antonio: if at Dist202, then people over 21 may be prohibited from coming. E – definitely adults should be allowed.

Gustavo – likes the idea. Flow so everything works together. There may be more participation. E – would mean it would start at 8. Seems like a really long day. R.E. – any day would be that way, though, b/c of the conference. Antonio – would hate to see it get lost in the general conference. April – has been working with other committees on the youth component. Would get more crossover on a later night.

Who are we really trying to target? The people going to the summit or the national conference? E – people at the conference would be the best b/c could get exposed to new things. GLBT community at least know something about what a ball is. A different way to do prevention

Wednesday night? Susan – would get other youth. Antonio – think about sizable group of Minneapolis youth that would attend. Susan – would they come on a Tuesday or Wednesday? Antonio – don’t think day matters. Gustavo – exposing people outside of this community; educating about the disproportionate impact.

WEDNESDAY as PRIMARY CHOICE.

Location:
Will District 202 allow adults?

At Summit space? Antonio: might be a pricey option, not best, most friendly. Other space could feel more intimate. Dist 202 would be best. But Wed is a drop-in night.

Downtown:
Tuesday night – Salera restaurant with event/reception space.
Patrick’s Cabaret – it’s kind of far, in South Minneapolis

Ask people in the ball community… R.E. will check back with Chico.

Antonio: Budget… by 31st need all budget items at Steering Committee meeting. Allocated $150 for youth materials. Would include space rental if we don’t get it donated.

E – Content Committee – will be asking for youth committee breakout session proposals…

VII. During the LGBTI Anti-Tobacco Summit… What do we want to happen?

a. Action Room? E – having a few different things in one room for youth to do… making zines, buttons, fliers… could pass out at the summit or conference. Youth can make a difference.

Antonio – 5 breakout rooms total. Possible to have one youth-oriented room where youth workshops take place? E – that would be awesome! R.E. agrees.

E - Place before the ball for youth to prepare… in same room.

b. Workshops?
§ E – content committee had ideas of topics / suggestions.
§ Susan – content areas included: youth subcommittee planning peer to peer trainings; training new advocates – youth program coordinators; local work presentations. Targeted 2 workshops for youth subcommittee to decide what they should be. Only 2 afternoon breakout sessions, 1 ½ hours each. Want to involve peer youth leaders & presenters & learn from youth. Trainings mainstream tobacco advocates to include our youth. Never before have we had the opportunity for youth to give input in this summit.
§ Susan – poster accepted on making school-based cessation programs more sensitive; (with Loretta) more broad…

Possible Topics
§ E – it’s hard to approach friends who smoke. How to have this conversation…
§ Gustavo – tobacco industry marketing to LGBTQ community; advocacy session on how to be a youth advocate… how to fight the industry. Youth Advocacy and Marketing
§ Panel with projects

c. Youth Caucus?
§ E – Whatever info youth talk about, should have a PowerPoint or Poster to present back to general summit.

d. Other??

Gustavo… create working documents for each thing we’re planning, so it’s more structured. Will draft some. R.E. has all the notes.

VIII. Funding Update

Who’s applied for scholarships??
www.tobaccocontrolconference.org/2007
link on scholarship program.
May 27 = deadline!

Antonio: with all scholarships we’ll be offering, we’ll probably need to decrease these. Possibly reserving 2 or 3 in each that will only be for people attending the LGBTI summit. Daunting budget. Last year only $8-10,000; this year it’s about $38,000.

VII. Next Meeting: Friday, June 1 4pm EST / 1pm PST / 10am Hawaii
Phone number: 1-877-791-3294
Passcode: 77350
